A little context

When to use a box plot.

Compare the spread of values across groups. The line marks the median; the box contains the middle half of the observations.

The data you need

One numeric variable and an optional grouping variable.

A design thought

Keep the numeric scale the same across groups to make their spreads comparable. Show outliers so the full picture remains visible.

Good question

What do the box and whiskers represent?

The box runs from the first to the third quartile, with a line at the median. In this example, whiskers reach the most extreme observations within 1.5 interquartile ranges of the box, and points show values beyond them.
